Paleo Sol

Description

Paleo Sol is an instrumental album by pedal steel guitarist Barry Walker Jr (Rose City Band, North Americans), a Portland-based musician whose playing, rooted in country and folk traditions, opens up toward minimalism, ambient, and a contemplative spirituality. In a trio with drummer Rob Smith and bassist Jason Willmon, Walker shapes patient, deep soundscapes where pedal steel melodies, delicate guitars, supple percussion, and warm bass evoke geological time, its slowness and its upheavals. The pieces alternate between vast collective panoramas and intimate solo moments, each conceived as a musical topographical study. Composed during the birth of his first child and nourished by his training as a geologist, the album takes its name from paleosols (ancient soils) and a reflection on the deep history of the Earth and the Sun. Between science and poetry, Paleo Sol reveals attentive, elegant, and intention-filled music, where sonic exploration responds to the exploration of the natural world.
