At the end of the previous decade, in Memphis, The Barbaras were playing — a handful (if one could really hold them) of young, wild twenty-somethings performing in the city’s clubs. They tried hard, but never really recorded an album. Jay Reatard recorded them between two tours, but by taking two members with him for several months of intensive touring, the band would not survive long enough. Hayes and Pope eventually leave Reatard for the band Wavves, and he then tells them he has erased all the Barbaras recordings. In 2011, the recordings are found on Reatard’s digital recorder, and Alicia Trout helps the band finish and mix the recording. In the end, there really is a Barbaras album...
