Babes In Toyland is part of the Riot Girl scene from the early 90s Alternative Rock and Grunge era, and the band is entirely made up of girls. Girls who rock! They were featured on MTV with the song "Bruise Violet," which appeared on Beavis and Butthead at some point. What we have is a thick slab of reinforced riffs dripping with grunge goodness in the cheeky guitar sounds and great vocals from lead singer Kat Bjelland, who has a gritty and aggressive voice that conveys a vision of a "very dominant woman." She is quite captivating. The best thing about Fontanelle is that this band uses simple writing to create effective music. Most of the lyrics on this album seem to deal with unrequited love, female jealousy, etc., but the overall tone of the album is pretty cool; it's good grunge music—just with a feminine touch.
