What happens when you take a band that operates within the imposing, steel-gray framework of Chicago and send them to the sunny beaches of Southern California to make an album? You get Blinded By Oblivion. On Blinded By Oblivion, Axis: Sova uses a host of catchy musical elements to fuel a lyrical perspective illuminated by allegories about social separation and identity crisis. While this may not be necessarily new in the world of Axis, the band's commitment to mutation and evolution has led them to welcome a (human) drummer, Josh Johannpeter, into the group and leave Chicago to record in a new location. Combined with new drum machines, the rhythms found on the album weave something both organic and synthetic into each song. This stereo convergence allows Jeremy Freeze's bass and Brett Sova's guitar to draw from the source with unprecedented contrast and brevity, providing a foundation for their assured voices to harmonize gloriously. Thanks to the bold, hi-fi production by Ty Segall, who helped bring the band's latest vision to life at his Harmonizer Studios, Blinded By Oblivion is at times fierce, at times brilliantly cut from diamond. The clash between industrial alloy and indelible nature is felt sonically.
