Retrospectively hailed by AllMusic as a "post-punk masterpiece," the album "Playing with a Different Sex" was praised by Record Mirror upon its release for its incisive critique of sexual stereotypes and all forms of possession. Among the themes addressed are sexual politics, the torture of women imprisoned in Northern Ireland during the Troubles of the 1970s, as well as a striking cover of David Bowie's "Repetition," which deals with domestic violence. The album reached number 33 on the UK charts and contains the single "It's Obvious," which peaked at number 37 on the US Club Play Singles chart. Available on black vinyl, it comes with a booklet.
