Description

After the release of *The Day Before Halloween*, a conceptual and imaginative album driven by distorted synths, Atmosphere returns with *WORD?*, bringing the duo back to their original sound. The album highlights the undeniable talent of producer Ant, who leans into boom-bap aesthetics and brings unique energy to Slug’s sharp and insightful flow. While their recent releases had become more cinematic and concerned with the human condition, *WORD?* manages to reintroduce lighter moments. The sharp snares and thick, warm bassline of album opener "Fleetwood" as well as the resonant melodies of "Clocked" recall the duo's early days, while tracks like "Woes," "Strung," and "Vanish" shed light on everyday difficulties in a playful way. The album unfolds like a stroll through a range of experiences and emotions with a wide array of guests including the late MF Doom, as well as Evidence, Sa-Roc, Aesop Rock, Lateef the Truthspeaker, Muja Messiah, Musab, Nino Bless, Nikki Jean, Anwar HighSign, BlackLiq, and Haphduzn. The result is a project that feels like it comes from the era, or rather the mindset, of albums like *God Loves Ugly*, *Seven's Travels*, or the popular *Sad Clown* series, while also sounding as refined and polished as more recent albums like *Mi Vida Local* or *Whenever*. Ultimately, *WORD?* combines the breadth of Atmosphere's talents with the beauty of their progression, while showing that they still have a lot of fun in the creative process and are not afraid to let the listener have fun too.
