Description

Atine's music is Persian music, very much of the present. Atine consists of five female musicians who explore both classical and popular Persian music, without burdening themselves with repetitions or imitations. They rediscover the intoxications of Saadi's ghazals, the poems of Sheikh Bahaï, and the great romantics of the Qajar era. The refined arrangement of Persian music, the intertwined flows of the târ and qanûn, the agility of the tombak drum, and the deep nobility of the singing are here tinged with the dark reflections of the European viola da gamba. Yet, this is neither an occidentalization, nor a recontextualization, nor a subversion. There is not a single note from Atine that is not Persian. But it is a Persia in the broad sense.
