On his fifth studio album, "Julia," which will be released on February 13 via One Little Independent Records, Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir explores new and fascinating territories. After years of collaborating with translators like John Grant and exploring his father Einar Georg Einarsson's poems, Ásgeir wrote his own lyrics for the first time in his long and brilliant career. The result is a deeply contemplative work, imbued with nostalgia, where Ásgeir meditates on his past regrets and hopes for the future, guided by the shadow of the eponymous character. Ásgeir has long been recognized for his complex folk-pop, polished production, and melancholic, moving falsetto. "Julia" marks a turning point, not only toward greater lyrical autonomy but also toward cathartic sincerity. The songs, both superbly performed and deeply lived, bear witness to this. "It was the first time I wrote lyrics entirely on my own," he confides. "It was intimidating. I'm still finding my way. But I tried to open up and I learned a lot from this experience. It was real therapy."
