With *Les Liaisons dangereuses*, Roger Vadim caused a scandal. Drawing inspiration from Laclos' famous epistolary novel, the director presented a film to early 1960s audiences in which libertinism, machinations, and the bourgeoisie intertwine in 1960s Paris. Gérard Philipe and Jeanne Moreau are excellent in it, and this film is often considered one of Vadim's best. It also owes much to its music, which reflects Vadim's taste for jazz.
Indeed, for the soundtrack of *Les Liaisons dangereuses*, Vadim called upon Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers, whose exceptional musical qualities contribute to a record full of bold musical ideas and a wonderful selection of brilliant themes. Most of the tracks are performed by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from mid-1959, with trumpeter Lee Morgan, saxophonist Barney Wilen, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt joining the explosive drummer/leader.
