Tough Love is releasing Sunday Music For An Overpass by April Magazine for the first time on vinyl, an album that originally came out on cassette in 2021 in very limited quantities on Paisley Shirt. Hailing from San Francisco, April Magazine exists both at the heart and the fringe of the local underground scene. Centered around Peter Hurley, the band cultivates a permanent air of mystery: improvised concerts, an ever-changing lo-fi sound, and dozens of unreleased tracks that feed into their legend. Upon its initial release, Sunday Music For An Overpass already sought to reveal a bit more about the band while preserving its elusive aura. This vinyl edition, four years later, only enhances that hazy charm. Their music evokes Spacemen 3, The Pastels, Mazzy Star, and The Jesus & Mary Chain, all while enveloping them in a hypnotic lo-fi breath. The instrumentals, particularly expressive, exude a fascinating melancholy. Even remastered, the album retains its mystery: the more you listen, the less you feel you truly grasp them, and that’s the whole point. April Magazine perhaps reminds us that there is no center to the universe… and that beauty is always found a little on the margins.
