"I Care Because You Do" is often considered a pivotal album in James's career: the tracks it contains are very different from his previous works, which were characterized by acid, ambient, and more generally, techno. Long, repetitive tracks played on analog synthesizers and drum machines, and occasionally strings. Uniquely in James's career, the creation dates of the tracks are indicated: they were composed in 1990, 1993, and 1994. "Richard D. James" is the album that followed in 1996. It refers to the death of the brother with whom Richard shared the same name (this is where the "Twin" in Aphex Twin is said to come from).
