Description

The star of this CD is the organ of the Benedictine Abbey of Weingarten, in the Black Forest. The basilica itself is a masterpiece of Baroque art, consecrated in 1724. It deserved the finest organ possible: the work was entrusted to Joseph Gabler and lasted 13 years. The sound was found to be so beautiful that the legend soon arose that Gabler had sold his soul to the devil to obtain the “Vox humana”; the Choral BWV 663 by J.S. Bach gives us the opportunity to hear it. - The organ fits perfectly with the Baroque music of its time, from the austere Variations on a Choral by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) to the elegant and orchestral Organ Sonata by J.H. Knecht (1752-1817), which brings the organ out of the church. Between these extremes, we can mention Georges Muffat, originally from Savoy, who traveled all over Europe and achieved an original synthesis of French, Italian, and German styles. His Toccata Septima requires great agility. Mozart's Andante is a delightful curiosity composed for an automaton, based on a theme from The Magic Flute. - DDD 70:36 / German-English booklet
