Anouar Brahem : oud - Klaus Gesing : bass clarinet - Björn Meyer : bass - Khaled Yassine : percussion These are three sketched fragments that make up the heart of Anouar Brahem's new project. "I suddenly felt that there was something new, something opening up to yet unexplored spaces." The repertoire of The Astounding Eyes of Rita is inspired by Arab tradition and relies heavily on melody. One will notice the use of certain sound colors heard on the Thimar project, instrumental dialogues that intersect and diverge especially in a medium register, and a vibrant rhythm. The group was formed with the participation of producer Manfred Eicher. Clarinetist Klaus Gesing, an improviser with surprisingly fluid phrasing, has a natural affinity for Brahem's sound universe. The timbre of Björn Meyer's electric bass effortlessly blends with that of the oud, providing a subtle and flexible foundation. Finally, the young Lebanese Khaled Yassine brings a vital pulse to the darbouka in this transcultural chamber music where rigor and freedom, past and present respond to each other mutually.
