Héroïnes du Baroque vénitien

Description

The opening of the Teatro San Cassiano in Venice in 1637 is one of the major events in the history of opera. We leave the private circles of aristocratic and ecclesiastical courts, and opera becomes a popular spectacle open to all. The Gods are no longer the only ones to make the law; they are challenged by the Vices and the Virtues, who preach morality in the Prologues. The heroes are kings, empresses, dictators, courtesans, but also nurses, valets, soldiers, philosophers, and above all lovers, male and female. It is to this human theater that these operas invite us, a theater played out between the comic and the tragic. Francesco Cavalli, with his twenty-seven surviving operas, offers us a fascinating version of this theater of life. A single guiding thread unites the excerpts chosen by Leonardo Garcia Alarcon from each of them: the expression of human passions. A fascinating program that brings new insight into Cavalli’s operas and helps reveal part of the mystery that still surrounds his works.
