In Renaissance Spain, the villancico was born as a song in the vernacular, deeply rooted in popular culture. Little by little, this genre crossed the threshold of the sacred to become part of the heart of religious celebrations, notably those of Christmas and Epiphany. Performed in cathedrals, villancicos then became the reflection of a collective fervor, vibrant and sincere, comparable to devotional statues or hagiographic tales that nourish the faith of the people. This album invites us on a true musical journey through the songs and spiritual villancicos composed by Francisco GUERRERO (1528-1599) following his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Throughout this perilous journey, marked by the discovery of the holy places of Christ’s life, the composer draws deep inspiration, giving birth to works imbued with emotion, gentleness, and intense humanity. BIO EXPRESS: For more than fifteen years, French mezzo-soprano Anna Reinhold has built a rich career alongside the greatest conductors, guided by insatiable curiosity, a taste for challenge, and a quest for freedom through music, with a predilection for the Baroque repertoire. At her side, the Argentine lutenist and guitarist Quito Gato stands out for his spirit of research and his talent, nourished by numerous prestigious collaborations in Europe. Their meeting in 2013 at the Aix-en-Provence Festival marked the beginning of a deep artistic complicity. Together, they explore new musical horizons, leading to the project El jardín del Cielo, where their shared sensitivity brings Guerrero’s spiritual world to life with accuracy and simplicity.
