Angela Autumn has always been drawn to the mountains. Growing up in the Appalachian region of West Pennsylvania, she channels this landscape into her voice, infusing the timeless influence of streams and rolling foothills into her folk songs with varied influences. With her second album, she proves, however, that she is just as interested in modernity as she is in tradition. "Believer" is a rich musical record, blending the rustic music of her beginnings with the hybrid sounds (including indie rock, psychedelia, pop, and gothic country) of her current universe. The public still nicknames her "The Rose of the Appalachians," a nickname that refers to her roots in the Allegheny and her mastery of the clawhammer banjo, which have contributed to making her a critically acclaimed solo artist. Released just after tours opening for Bonny Light Horseman, Cut Worms, Langhorne Slim, and others, "Believer" was created in collaboration with Isaiah Beard, the multi-instrumentalist and producer known as Baerd. The two artists had previously collaborated on "Electric Lizard," a viral hit that helped transform Angela Autumn from a traditional folk singer into a musician with multiple and eclectic influences in 2023. With its sound whirlwind blending indie textures and abstract americana, "Electric Lizard" heralded promising new songs. On the twelve tracks of the album, traditional folk and clawhammer banjo intertwine with grunge guitar, studio experimentation, and indie melodies to create a hybrid sound, while Angela paints both personal and profound images. Addressing themes such as introspection, imagination, and the healing power of nature, "Believer" sits halfway between nature and the landscapes we create in our minds: experimental, eclectic, and ever-evolving, the album transcends the primitive sounds of its Appalachian influences to forge a sound that is uniquely hers.
