Beethoven's Piano Concertos are key to understanding this instrument, which composers often preferred to the harpsichord in the early 19th century. The strong influence of Mozart is noted in the First Concerto (c. 1795), while the Piano Concerto No. 4, composed nearly ten years later, reveals the strong and generous personality of a Beethoven at the height of his artistic maturity. In this second part of the recording of Beethoven's works, the German pianist Martin Helmchen performs these very contradictory Concertos, accompanied by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin conducted by Andrew Manze.
