Franz Schubert

Description

Schubert on the fortepiano: after his highly acclaimed and praised recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, András Schiff presents once again important works from the piano repertoire on an ancient instrument. The Hungarian pianist, one of the greatest current interpreters of Schubert, chooses this time a program composed of two sonatas, Moments musicaux, four Impromptus (D 935), the Hungarian Melody, and an Allegretto, returning to the composer almost 20 years after having recorded his Fantasy in C. The interpreter comments: "My fortepiano was built by Franz Brodmann around 1820 in Vienna. For me, it is perfectly suited for the works of Schubert. It has in its timbre something typically Viennese, a soft and melancholic musicality. One could not imagine the dark forces and deep abysses hidden in his music. The dramatic progressions and brilliant climaxes are breathtaking. But it is with the calm and quietest sounds that Schubert touches our hearts like no other composer."
