András Schiff continues his exploration of the music of Franz Schubert and dedicates this new chapter to the Four Impromptus D 899 and the compositions from 1828, the last year of the composer’s too brief life: the Three Pieces D 946 (which possess all the characteristics of the impromptu except the name notes Misha Donat in the CD booklet), the Sonata in B minor D 958 and the Sonata in A major D 959. For these recordings, Schiff once again chose to use his pianoforte made by Franz Brodmann in Vienna, around 1820. Critics have unanimously praised the interpretations that Schiff has offered of Schubert's music: 'I see no one else of his caliber capable of mastering both the pianoforte and the modern piano with such a sense of nuance on each of them,' wrote Stephen Plaistow in a review published in Gramophone.
