After winning a JUNO Award in 2016, ANCIIENTS was officially recognized as one of the leading bands in progressive metal. However, maintaining this state of grace has not proven to be an easy task. For too long, fans feared that the Canadian band would be on indefinite hiatus. Their return was compromised by numerous twists and troubles, but after eight years of silence, they are back with a new lineup and a new album that stands as their most powerful, intoxicating, and sincere work. Each has its own unique flavor, ranging from plaintive folk to southern blues to psychedelic prog. Of course, ANCIIENTS is not afraid to headbang. After an acoustic passage, "Cloak of the Vast and Black" reveals itself to be a monster of riffs. Conceptually, the album is just as imposing. It tells the story of a society enslaved by forces from another dimension. But at its core, ‘Beyond the Reach of the Sun’ is about perseverance. Just as the slaves of history discover spiritual knowledge through a cosmic entity, the writing of these songs led the band to discover new sources of inspiration. "Searching for a better way," sings Kenny Cook on the epic finale "In The Absence of Wisdom." His voice resonates and ricochets, but its brilliance comes from a new intuition.
