After winning a JUNO Award in 2016, ANCIIENTS were officially designated one of progressive metal's flagship bands. However, maintaining that state of grace proved to be no easy task. For too long, fans feared the Canadian outfit might be on indefinite hiatus. Their return was compromised by numerous twists and turns and hassles, but after eight years of silence, they are back with a new line-up and a new album that stands as their most powerful, intoxicating and heartfelt work.
Fans who have waited will not be disappointed by 'Beyond the Reach of the Sun'. The first single "Melt the Crown" unleashes not one, not two, but three guitar solos. Each has its own unique flavour, ranging from plaintive folk to southern blues to psychedelic prog.
Of course, ANCIIENTS are not afraid to headbang. After an acoustic interlude, "Cloak of the Vast and Black" reveals itself to be a monster of riffs. Conceptually, the album is just as imposing. It tells the story of a society enslaved by forces from another dimension. But at its heart, 'Beyond the Reach of the Sun' is about perseverance. Just as the slaves in the story discover spiritual knowledge through a cosmic entity, writing these songs led the band to discover new sources of inspiration. "Searching for a better way", sings Kenny Cook on the epic finale "In The Absence of Wisdom". His voice resonates and echoes, but its brilliance comes from a new intuition.
With 'Beyond the Reach of the Sun', ANCIIENTS reaches the pinnacle of progressive metal.
