50TH ANNIVERSARY: THE COLLECTION

Description

"America is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with three compilations tracing the journey through the decades of the multi-Grammy Award-winning group, from the top of the pop charts into the hearts of countless fans. Renowned for their memorable live performances, the multi-platinum-selling group led by founding members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell has also announced a series of anniversary concerts. Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek started their career in 1970 as a trio that would quickly triumph thanks to the success of their number-one hit “A Horse With No Name” and numerous hits with legendary producer George Martin. Fans immediately felt close to the band for what they represented: three talented singer-songwriters with simple, direct expression, lovers of great melodies and tight vocal harmonies. In the compilation booklet, Bunnell explains: “There was no artifice in what we did.” Beckley adds: “We didn’t have a grand strategy – our music simply became the soundtrack for a great many people. That’s something I have the utmost respect for.” AMERICA has influenced several generations of musicians with its acoustic rock rich in harmonies and pop finesse serving classics that reflected their era. The band’s great successes in the 1970s and early 1980s sometimes overshadowed the depth of their lyrics, such as the ecological message of “Horse With No Name,” the romanticism of “Sister Golden Hair,” the military paranoia of “Sandman” (partly based on conversations with soldiers returning from Vietnam), and the wise advice of “Don’t Cross The River.” Further proof of the band’s popularity, many AMERICA tracks have been used in a multitude of films (including American Hustle, The Nice Guys, The Last Unicorn, and Girl Most Likely), TV shows (The Sopranos, Friends, Breaking Bad, and Saturday Night Live), and video games (including Grand Theft Auto). 2-LPSide One 1.
