ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT is the new duo of Ariel Engle (La Force, Patrick Watson, Broken Social Scene) and Efrim Manuel Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion). Longtime friends, collaborators, and pillars of the Montreal post-punk community, this is their first true project together. AH_ML weaves these two unique voices through polished sounds and swelling drones, developing Menuck's eponymous work on modular and analog synths, infusing it with a warmth and melodic richness thanks to Engle's vocals. Darling The Dawn is an enchanting album of sounds and compositions that masterfully blend genres: a kind of electronic shoegaze infused with freak-folk, krautrock, darkwave, and post-industrial, shifting from ambient minimalism to pulsating maximalism. For Engle and Menuck, ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT fits into a folk lineage that ranges from Pentangle and Trees to White Magic and Amps For Christ, even though there is no discernible guitar or acoustic instrumentation on the album (warm, distorted synths provide the palette, along with the transformed violin by Jessica Moss). “We Live On A Fucking Planet And Baby That's The Sun” and “The Sons And Daughters Of Poor Eternal” feature the resplendent drumming of Liam O'Neil (Suuns).
