'I Am Alicia' is the debut album from Alicia Walter, who started as the frontwoman of the Chicago art-rock band, Oshwa. It is also a daring autobiographical narrative about self-discovery that invites the listener to question their own story, a soundtrack that helps overcome life's obstacles when support is lacking. Embracing influences ranging from jazz and American songbook standards to hip-hop and new wave, Alicia Walter creates her own musical genre, an eclectic and fearless pop that paves the way for acceptance and love. Her production approach involves an overabundance of arrangements, spanning from electronic to orchestral, using everything imaginable in between, from talk box to tap shoes. Known for her "nearly cosmic voice" (WIRED) and "truly unique songwriting" (Consequence of Sound), Alicia invites us into her world. Inspired by a life in perpetual motion and born from an unceasing passion for creation, 'I Am Alicia' puts her personal mythology into practice on one hand and calls for liberation and joining her on her odyssey on the other. The album developed during a period of intense change for the artist, when she moved from Chicago to New York in 2016, where the only constant was time spent with herself. Alicia Walter views this collection of 10 tracks as "a hero's journey through the unconscious, driven by my desire to experiment with who I am and what I make of life." From the beginning of the opening track "Prelude," her powerful voice captures her thirst for experience and understanding. As a manipulated voice becomes trapped in a loop, she sings about what it might be like to shed the limiting beliefs that accumulate over time. Guided by an otherworldly force, she set a deadline for herself to complete what would become her first solo album. Close to burnout two weeks before finishing the album, Alicia met producer and sound engineer Devin Greenwood (Sufjan Stevens, Steve Reich, Norah Jones), a reminder that the journey is as important, if not more important, than the destination. Together, they reworked the album for a full year at Devin's The Honey Jar studio in Brooklyn, testing the range and texture of her voice while magnifying the emotional resonance at the heart of each song through additional takes. The result is a delicately balanced musical house of cards, transcending genres and showing what can happen when an artist follows their instincts. What Walter considers new "characters" - parts of herself she discovered and encountered on the path to 'I Am Alicia' - are embodied in the album's tracks, which explore themes of expectation, identity, and ego through a variety of sounds and attitudes!
