Singer and violinist Alice Zawadzki, pianist Fred Thomas (who also plays hurdy-gurdy and drums here), and double bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado offer, on the occasion of their trio's first album, a rare collective alchemy, blending folk idioms from a multitude of traditions into fluid forms with a constant sense of interplay. Exploring in its music a perfectly singular stylistic universe encompassing folk songs, chamber music, free improvisation, and acoustic jazz, the trio presents in "Za Górami" the full extent of its territories in a truly fascinating set. Traditional Ladino tunes sit alongside striking interpretations of "Dezile A Mi Amor" by Gustavo Santaolalla and "Suéltate Las Cintas" by Simón Diaz, while the traditional Polish air that gives the album its title, "Za Górami", receives a poignant interpretation from Zawadzki, and the Renaissance piece "Je Suis Trop Jeunette" finds its soulmate in "Gentle Lady", a text by James Joyce set to music by Fred Thomas. The album was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano under the artistic direction of Manfred Eicher.
