Ali Reza Ghorbani pays tribute to Rûmi, the great Persian poet of the 13th century. Jalâl ud Dîn Rûmî is a great Persian mystic who profoundly influenced Sufism. His name is closely linked to the order of the "whirling dervishes," one of the main Sufi brotherhoods, which he founded in the city of Konya, now located in Turkey. Most of his poems were inspired by his best friend, Shams Tabrîzî. Rûmî also adopted Aesop's fables in his main work, the Masnavî, which La Fontaine would later partially translate into French. Iranians, Turks, and Arabs today continue to admire his poems. Recognized during his lifetime as a saint, Rûmî had quite innovative positions regarding political power and Islamic dogma. He enjoyed associating with Christians, Jews, and other faiths, just as much as with Muslims. Ali Reza Ghorbani, at thirty, is one of the best interpreters of the new generation of Persian singing, in the lineage of the great Mohammed Reza Shadjarian. By choosing Rûmi's poems for his new album, he offers an exceptional vocal art of classical Persian singing, which combines rare and complex techniques: power, finesse, modulation, and softness come together for flights that evoke great passions or the torments of the soul and remind us that Iranian music is undoubtedly one of the most refined in the world.
