Feudalist Tarts

With Feudalist Tarts (1985), Alex Chilton, the leader of the American pop groups Big Star and The Box Tops, was reinventing himself as a Southern hipster by offering original tracks like "Stuff" and sly soul covers such as "B-A-B'Y" and "Thank You John," while adding a brass section to his tried-and-true rhythm section. On this expanded reissue of the album, which has been out of print since 1986, the second side features a number of rare Chilton tracks, including "Rubber Room" and "Wild Kingdom." Chilton had hit rock bottom in his hometown of Memphis after 15 years of substance abuse and wild partying. He chose New Orleans as the city where he would rebuild himself. One of the benefits was the exposure to all the music of the city. He immediately immersed himself in the laid-back, stretched grooves of New Orleans. The covers he selected for this record are songs he heard in the streets of the Louisiana city, played by seasoned musicians.
