Description

“Since a long time ago” speaks of the art of the impromptu encounter between people of good company. For some time, Tony Malaby had wanted to “do something” with Louis Sclavis. On the occasion of the trio bringing together Richard Bonnet, Tony and Sylvain Darrifourcq in our concert season in 2018, we had invited Louis Sclavis to join the already formed group. The clarinets and saxophones of these two major figures of jazz today sing in unison, but not only that. The deep sound of Richard Bonnet, who signs three of the four compositions on this album, reminds us that he creates the cement of this ephemeral ensemble in the making. The inventiveness of Sylvain Darrifourcq, his skins and metals rubbed, struck, holds a precious and singular place in this scaffolding assembled from scratch by these protagonists, even. The ensemble sound stretches out like a cat in the sun. Speech circulates, questions, answers the questioning of one, then suggests the new subject to follow, then escapes, but the cohesion of the whole is fashioned, forging an almost magical alloy, made up of as many men’s stories as sonic hunting grounds open onto horizons that are invented as they go along. Each tells his own story, but the tour de force, as often in this music, is that the story of each, woven from so many threads of different memories gathered here in this unique moment, becomes one. The encounter took place. This record bears witness to it, leaves a trace, and says that beyond differences, inventing together builds the world of today, of tomorrow.
