THE LOST ALBUM FROM THE AVANT-GARDE ICON AND ETERNAL LEADER OF SUICIDESESSIONS RECORDED IN NEW YORK BETWEEN 1995 AND 1996Alan Vega's name is synonymous with tireless and boundless creativity. From the late 1950s, when he was a fine arts student at Brooklyn College, throughout his years with the band Suicide, and until his death in 2016, Alan Vega dedicated his life to creation. This process naturally led to a wealth of material that didn't necessarily see the light of day immediately after being recorded, known as the Vega Vault. *Mutator* is the first release in a series of publications from these archives to appear on Sacred Bones Records. The project was recorded with Liz Lamere, Vega's long-time collaborator, in his New York studio from 1995 to 1996. It documents a particularly fertile period in Vega's creative life. He released 11 solo albums between the 1980s and 2000s, in addition to his many collaborations and Suicide's records. In 2019, Jared Artaud (The Vacant Lots), a friend and confidant of Lamere and Vega, rediscovered the raw, unmixed recordings from the *Mutator* sessions. Once mixed and produced, the album was able to take the visionary form that was evident in the tapes. In the studio, Vega and Lamere primarily sought to experiment with sound. *Mutator* is an album inspired by the bustling streets of New York, not only by the explosion of hip-hop scenes in the boroughs but also literally the noise of the streets, traffic, and urban life in general. Combined with Vega's incomparable voice and finalized by Lamere and Artaud 25 years after the initial recordings, *Mutator* finally shines as it should.
