Description

The name Alan Vega is synonymous with tireless and limitless creativity. Since the late 1950s when he was a fine arts student at Brooklyn College, throughout his years in the band Suicide, and up until his death in 2016, Alan Vega spent his life creating. This approach naturally led to a wealth of material that did not necessarily see the light of day immediately after being recorded, known as Vega Vault. Mutator is the first release in a series of publications drawn from these archives to be released on Sacred Bones Records. The project was recorded alongside Liz Lamere, Vega's longtime collaborator, in his New York studio from 1995 to 1996. It documents a particularly fertile period in Vega's creative life. He released 11 solo albums between the 1980s and 2000, in addition to his numerous collaborations and the records of Suicide. In 2019, Jared Artaud (The Vacant Lots), a friend and confidant of Lamere and Vega, rediscovered the raw and unedited recordings from the Mutator sessions. Once mixed and produced, the album was able to take on the visionary form that was emerging from the tapes. In the studio, Vega and Lamere primarily sought to experiment with sound. Mutator is an album inspired by the bustling streets of New York, not only from the explosion of hip-hop scenes in the neighborhoods but also literally the noise of the streets, traffic, and urban life in general. Paired with Vega's incomparable voice and finalized by Lamere and Artaud 25 years after the initial recordings, Mutator finally shines as it should.
