Collision Drive, released in 1981, is Alan Vega's second solo album. While his debut laid the groundwork for minimalist rockabilly and blues, Collision Drive broadens the palette with a more raw and textured energy. Vega’s lyrics explore universal themes, blending fascination with urban life, science fiction, politics, comics, love, and the mysteries of the universe, in an album vibrant with feeling and rebellion. Vega continues his constant reinvention, exploring new variations while maintaining his unique aesthetic. Replacing drum machines with a live drummer and surrounding himself with a hard rock band, he offers a more dynamic vision of his world. The album navigates between the hypnotic punk rockabilly of “Magdalena 82,” the frantic cover of “Be Bop A Lula,” and the psychobilly of “Raver,” demonstrating his perpetual innovation. Remastered by Josh Bonati from the original tapes, Collision Drive is reissued by Sacred Bones Records. Broader than its predecessor yet just as uncompromising, the album embodies the fusion of rockabilly outlaw, cosmic preacher, and outsider visionary.
