Sost

Description

In 6 years, Akalé Wubé has never stopped expanding the framework in which its music unfolds, increasingly rich and deep, in the image of its primary source of inspiration: the popular Ethiopian repertoire of the 60s and 70s.While its third album, Sost ("Three" in Amharic) follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, it is also the work of a more learned, more mature group, which has multiplied opportunities to confront its music with diverse audiences and to hone its groove in all circumstances. In Ethiopia, the group observed that Ethiopian musicians no longer played the tunes from the golden age of Swinging Addis. A disconcerting discovery, but also a liberating one, which allowed the musicians to fully embrace their approach and for their latest album to come to fruition serenely.More than half of the tracks on Sost are original compositions, the other half consisting of covers of songs unearthed, some of them, from ancient audio cassettes brought back from Ethiopia. The presence of Manu Dibango on the album is thus in no way opportunistic: between the pioneer of Afro-jazz and Akalé Wubé, real bonds of musical and human friendship have been woven.Far from devout homage or outdated copy, Sost is the album in which ethio-groove regenerates and is reborn in all its forms.
