Black Pumas Guitarist Returns With Solo Album, a Love Letter to Latin American Ballads
Adrian Quesada’s new album is a celebration of the super funky, slightly delirious, and deeply soulful sounds that transcended Latin American cultural borders in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Featuring vocals from Puerto Rican icon, GRAMMY-winner, and former Calle 13 member, iLe, Colombian-American visionary Gabriel Garzón-Montano, Mexican R&B star Girl Ultra, as well as Angelica Garcia, Gaby Moreno, and contributions from living legends such as Marc Ribot and Beastie Boys musician Money Mark, Boleros Psicodélicos consists mainly of Adrian Quesada's original compositions, alongside covers of classic Latin American ballads. The 12 tracks were produced, engineered, mixed, and largely performed by Adrian Quesada, honoring and extending the influence of a personal obsession he has cultivated over the past 20 years. In 2020, during lockdown, he delved deeper into YouTube archives than ever before, expanding his knowledge from bands like Los Pasteles Verdes and Los Ángeles Negros to artists like Sandro and José José, while his sonic palette broadened from guitar and organ to harpsichords and orchestral arrangements that define much of the romanticism of Latin ballads.
