Reissue of Able Tasmans’ first album, A Cup Of Tea And A Lie Down (1986), featuring bonus tracks from the band’s 1985 EP The Tired Sun and three previously unreleased songs. Hailing from Whangarei, one of New Zealand’s northernmost towns, the band released four albums and two EPs between 1985 and 1993, all filled with their own distinctive brand of gentle, artful baroque pop. Also, they may be the only band from New Zealand to tastefully incorporate bagpipes into a song. Named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (who discovered New Zealand in 1642), the band themselves were keen explorers limited only by their imaginations. Their songwriting and arranging treads a line between baroque and indie pop. They incorporate field recordings and bring keyboards to the fore of their music.
