Founded by members from Iron Fist, Gentry, and Powerfool, Helloween's initial lineup featured Michael Weikath on guitar, Markus Grosskopf on bass, Kai Hansen singing and playing guitar, and Ingo Schwichtenberg on drums. Early releases include a 1985 self-titled EP and the album Walls of Jericho. The arrival of vocalist Michael Kiske turned the group into a quintet and enabled the creation of Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I (1987) and Part II (1988), two notable albums that shaped power metal.
Throughout their career, Helloween explored different musical directions, from the heavier speed metal roots to more melodic or darker sounds in later albums such as Chameleon (1993) and The Dark Ride (2000).

In 1986, 17-year-old Michael Kiske joined Helloween as vocalist after replacing temporary singer Ralph Sheepers, requesting the band adopt a more melodic style. This led directly to Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I & II.
After disputes with Noise Records and signing with EMI, Helloween faced legal action restricting their album releases to Europe and Japan, leading to lawsuits and fines in the late 1980s.
Following tensions, original member Kai Hansen departed the band in 1989 and later formed Gamma Ray. He was replaced by Roland Grapow, marking a new era for Helloween.
Released in 2000, The Dark Ride featured a gloomier sound departing from previous styles. Despite the success of the ballad "If I Could Fly," the album underperformed commercially.
