Jazz and Blues Compilation Vinyl: Anthologies, Best-Ofs and Label Sets

What is a jazz or blues compilation on vinyl?

A jazz or blues compilation on vinyl gathers tracks that were not originally recorded as one album: an artist's best-known sides, a label's catalog, or a themed selection. For these two genres, compilations are often the only way to hear music first issued on 78s or singles as a full LP. Robert Johnson's and Bessie Smith's recordings, for example, reached the long-playing format as compilations.

This page lists the jazz and blues compilations tracked on Vinyles.com, from best-ofs and box sets to label anthologies and themed collections. For each record you can compare offers from several partner stores, weigh a recent reissue against an older pressing, and spot double-LP editions or box sets that gather an entire catalog in one place.

Types of jazz and blues compilation LPs

Artist best-ofs are the easiest entry point, especially for musicians from the 78 era such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Sidney Bechet. Label anthologies tell the story of a record company: Chess Records for the Chicago blues of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Etta James, or Blue Note and Impulse! for jazz. For prewar blues, Yazoo is a well-established name, as is Arhoolie for country blues.

How to pick a good compilation record

Start with the publisher. A compilation released by the original label, or under license from it, usually draws on the original tapes and comes with full credits. Some budget European editions reuse older recordings whose rights have expired there, often without naming the audio source: they can sound fine, but there is no guarantee.

Then check the track list, recording dates, mono or stereo, and whether liner notes are included, since those details often separate two compilations of the same artist. On a used copy, the condition of the vinyl and jacket matters more than the age of the pressing: a scratched original is still a scratched record, however old it is.

Where to start your collection

On the jazz side, compilations of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk or Stan Getz cover several periods of a career on one record. For blues and soul, Ray Charles and Muddy Waters also have plenty of best-of LPs. Compare the editions offered by partner stores: for the same artist, track selection and overall quality vary a lot from one compilation to another.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vinyl compilation?

A vinyl compilation is a record that collects tracks from different sources: an artist's best songs, songs by several performers, or a label's catalog. Unlike a studio album, the selection is made after the fact. In jazz and blues, it often puts recordings first released on 78s onto a single LP.

Should I start with a compilation or an original album?

For artists who recorded between the 1920s and 1940s, a compilation is often the best starting point, since their music came out on 78s before the album era. For modern jazz musicians, original albums give a truer picture of their work, with compilations serving as an overview.

Why are some jazz compilations so cheap?

In Europe, the rights on many older recordings have expired, which lets publishers release low-cost compilations. The audio source is not always stated and sound quality varies. An official edition from the original label usually costs more but documents where the tapes came from.

How can I tell a well-made compilation apart?

A well-made compilation lists the publisher, recording dates and places, the musicians, and the tape source. Detailed liner notes are another good sign. Be wary of jackets with no credits or licensing information, which often go with uncertain audio sources.
