This compilation brings together some of the greatest tracks ever released by Black Jazz Records, a cult label that, in just four years of existence (1971-1975), released more than 20 major albums brilliantly blending spiritual jazz, funk, and top-level soul jazz. Like other essential independent labels of the era such as Strata-East or Tribe Records, Black Jazz focused on a small circle of key artists, many of whom saw their careers take off during this period - all represented here. Founded in Oakland, California by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory, Black Jazz was a true creative laboratory. Russell was its artistic driving force, developing new talents such as Doug Carn, a central figure on the label, who released four landmark albums with the exceptional voice of Jean Carn (later Jean Carne). The compilation also highlights The Awakening, Walter Bishop, Chester Thompson, Kellee Patterson, and other major artists. Together, they embody the unique Black Jazz aesthetic: spiritual, committed music, deeply groovy and now considered essential in the history of independent jazz.
