Trip-Hop & Drum'n'Bass: The electronic music that shines on vinyl
Trip-Hop: Bristol's dark soul pressed in wax
Born in early-90s Bristol's multicultural melting pot, trip-hop fuses downtempo hip-hop, dub, soul and electronica into an unmistakably crepuscular atmosphere. Massive Attack laid the foundation with Blue Lines (1991), soon followed by Portishead's monumental Dummy (1994) and Tricky's hallucinatory Maxinquaye (1995). James Lavelle's Mo'Wax label broadened the spectrum with DJ Shadow (Endtroducing....., 1996) and UNKLE, while Ninja Tune pushed a more abstract aesthetic through Coldcut, Amon Tobin and DJ Krush. Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps and Lamb round out a scene where every record becomes the soundtrack to a nocturnal urban wander.
Drum'n'bass: when breaks hit overdrive
Evolving from the UK rave and jungle scene, drum'n'bass channels its rhythmic onslaught through sped-up breakbeats (160-180 BPM) and abyssal basslines. Goldie delivered the genre-defining Timeless (1995) on his Metalheadz imprint, while Roni Size & Reprazent took home the Mercury Prize with New Forms (1997). LTJ Bukem mapped an atmospheric lane via Good Looking Records, Photek delivered surgical precision on Modus Operandi, and labels like Moving Shadow, RAM Records and Hospital Records carried the torch through to modern producers such as Noisia, Pendulum or Camo & Krooked. For collectors, original 12" cuts from the Metalheadz and Moving Shadow stables are prized for their sound-system-ready dynamics. By comparing offers from multiple specialist sellers, Vinyles.com helps you track down these gems, original Mezzanine pressings, limited Hospital runs or Mo'Wax rarities, without breaking the bank.
