New Wave

New Wave left its mark on the 80s by blending post-punk guitars, futuristic synthesizers, and catchy choruses. Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, and Duran Duran gave this movement an instantly recognizable identity, oscillating between elegant coolness and danceable energy. These albums resonate with particular intensity, where every synthetic bass and every melodic line electrifies the space.

Listening to them, we are drawn into a retro-modern atmosphere that still retains all its hypnotic power today.

New wave vinyl: albums, LPs and 12-inches in one place

This page gathers new wave vinyl records: the wiry, synth-laced pop that grew out of punk in the late 1970s, plus the bands carrying that sound today. You will find albums by New Order, Erasure, The Chameleons and A Certain Ratio, alongside newer acts such as Editors, White Lies, Working Men's Club and Nation of Language. Each record page lists offers from several partner stores, so you can compare a standard pressing, a remastered reissue, a color variant or a box set of the same title.

Buying new wave on vinyl: original, reissue or 12-inch

New wave was built for vinyl, and not just the album: the 12-inch single was a key format, carrying extended versions and remixes that never made the LP. Original 1980s albums often turn up used at fair prices because they were pressed in large numbers; check condition and country of pressing. For new copies, many 1980s albums have been reissued by their original labels or by Music On Vinyl, sometimes as deluxe editions with B-sides and 12-inch mixes.

Some reissues are cut from remastered digital files rather than the original tapes. That is not necessarily a flaw, but it is worth knowing before you pay extra for an edition sold as audiophile. New wave CDs, when they are listed, can be compared across partner stores in exactly the same way.

In the US, new wave took off with Blondie's "Parallel Lines" (1978), Devo's "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" (1978) and the B-52's self-titled debut in 1979, followed by Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" (1980). In the UK, Elvis Costello released "My Aim Is True" (1977) on Stiff, The Cure followed with "Seventeen Seconds" (1980), New Order put out "Power, Corruption & Lies" (1983) on Factory and Duran Duran delivered "Rio" (1982). Tears for Fears hit big with "Songs from the Big Chair" (1985).

Related scenes and where to go next

New wave overlaps with several neighboring scenes: synth-pop, more electronic; post-punk, darker; and cold wave. If you like the electronic side, Depeche Mode and Erasure are natural next steps. France had its own French-language new wave, with Indochine, Taxi Girl and Étienne Daho, now sought after by collectors. The current scene is active too, with new bands regularly releasing albums in this vein, often as limited color pressings.
