Ambient and new age records: what this page covers

This page gathers ambient and new age vinyl: electronic washes, drones, meditative music, pieces for synthesizers or acoustic instruments, and a little dark ambient. The catalog runs from Laraaji to Yann Tiersen, Vidna Obmana, De Fabriek and thisquietarmy. This music is made for long, unbroken listening, and a vinyl side that plays straight through suits it well. Each record page lists offers from several partner stores, so you can compare editions of the same album before clicking through.

Ambient and new age reissues: trusted labels and traps

A lot of 1970s and 1980s new age came out in small runs, often self-released, and stayed out of reach for decades. Since the 2010s, several labels have reissued it with care. Light in the Attic released "I Am the Center", a compilation of private-press American new age, followed by "Kankyō Ongaku" on Japanese environmental music. Music From Memory, based in Amsterdam, also digs up forgotten records. These reissues are often the only realistic way to hear such albums on vinyl.

Sound-wise, ambient is demanding: calm textures and silence reveal every click. A worn used copy ruins the experience, and a very long side is cut at a lower level. Check condition, side layout and master source before you buy. Also be wary of editions with no clearly identified label, which are common for sought-after out-of-print titles.

Essential ambient and new age albums

Brian Eno laid the groundwork with "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" (1978), then produced "Ambient 3: Day of Radiance" (1980) by Laraaji, a zither player who became a new age figure. With Harold Budd he made "The Plateaux of Mirror" (1980) and "The Pearl" (1984). That same year Steve Roach released "Structures from Silence". On the acoustic side, the Windham Hill label made George Winston's "Autumn" widely known. In the 1990s came Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" (1992), and the Kranky label became home to Stars of the Lid.

Ambient or new age: how to pick the right LPs

If you like electronic textures and abstract sound, start with Brian Eno's ambient work and move on to drone. If you prefer melody and acoustic instruments, Windham Hill's new age and Laraaji's records will feel more welcoming. Archival compilations are a great way to hear an entire scene on one record. The Mood collection, which this page belongs to, offers other selections built around a specific listening moment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ambient and new age music?

Ambient, defined by Brian Eno in the late 1970s, is atmospheric music that can be listened to closely or left in the background. New age, which grew in the same era, mostly in the United States, aims more at relaxation and meditation, often with melody and acoustic instruments. The two overlap a great deal.

What is the best ambient album to start with?

Brian Eno's "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" (1978) is the most logical starting point, since it gave the genre its name. For something more melodic, Harold Budd and Brian Eno's "The Pearl" is a natural next step. Electronic music fans can continue with Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works 85-92".

Why are original new age records so rare?

Much of the new age music of the 1970s and 1980s was self-released or issued by tiny labels in runs of a few hundred copies, often sold outside record stores. Those originals are scarce. Reissues from labels such as Light in the Attic and Music From Memory make them available on vinyl at a reasonable price.

Does ambient music sound good on vinyl?

Yes, as long as the record is clean and in good condition. The quiet passages and silences in ambient music make clicks and surface hiss much more audible than on a rock record. Keep discs clean, buy well-graded used copies and favor reissues cut from the original tapes.
