International Reggae
International reggae demonstrates the strength of a style born in the popular neighborhoods of Kingston and that has become a universal language. From the 70s, Jimmy Cliff and Toots and the Maytals brought this music to the world's biggest stages, revealing its unifying power.
Very quickly, each continent adopted this energy: Alpha Blondy in Ivory Coast, Lucky Dube in South Africa, Gentleman in Germany, or Groundation in the United States. Behind each voice, reggae takes on a different color, influenced by local realities and the musical traditions specific to each culture.
These black discs tell a story of exchanges and cross-cultural blending, where the swaying rhythm and powerful bass always serve as a common thread. International reggae is a borderless sound journey, to be relived through vinyl pressings that connect stages around the world.

Reggae without borders: how the Jamaican groove conquered the planet
From Kingston sound systems to global stages
Reggae was born in Jamaica in the late 1960s, carried by pioneers like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Lee 'Scratch' Perry. But by the mid-1970s, its universal message and irresistible groove had crossed oceans. The United Kingdom, with its deep Caribbean immigrant roots, became the genre's first international stronghold, artists like Steel Pulse, UB40, and Aswad adapted roots reggae to the British experience. The shockwave soon reached continental Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, sparking fascinating hybrid scenes where reggae engaged with local musical traditions.
Landmark artists and albums of international reggae
British reggae simply cannot be discussed without Steel Pulse's Handsworth Revolution (1978), a militant milestone released on Island Records, or UB40's Signing Off (1980), a self-produced double album blending dub with social commentary. In France, Serge Gainsbourg boldly embraced reggae on Aux armes et cætera (1979), recorded in Kingston with the legendary Sly & Robbie, while Tonton David popularized French raggamuffin in the 1990s with Peuples du monde. Across Africa, Alpha Blondy transcended borders with Apartheid Is Nazism (1985), and South African Lucky Dube delivered a string of conscious reggae albums like Slave (1987). In Oceania, New Zealand's Herbs fused reggae with Māori traditions. Each territory adds its own stone to the mosaic of a truly multicultural reggae.
Pressings, labels, and editions worth knowing
For collectors, international reggae offers rewarding treasure hunts. Original British pressings of Steel Pulse on Island Records or early French editions of Gainsbourg on Philips are highly sought after for the warmth of their analog mastering. Releases from the German label Ariwa, founded by Mad Professor, deliver top-quality dub pressings. Comparing vinyl prices and conditions across Vinyles.com's partner sellers helps you uncover these gems at the best value, whether you're chasing an original pressing or a carefully remastered reissue.
