Dancehall
Dancehall originated in the late 1970s in Jamaica, as a more direct and impactful evolution of reggae. With its fast rhythms, powerful basslines, and energetic vocals, it quickly conquered Kingston's sound systems and dance floors before spreading worldwide.
Iconic figures like Yellowman, Shabba Ranks, and Buju Banton shaped its early days, while contemporary artists such as Sean Paul, Beenie Man, and Popcaan helped it achieve international recognition.
Dancehall is characterized by its raw energy and festive roots, but it also reflects Jamaican social realities. Each vinyl offers a condensed intensity, with catchy choruses and productions made for live performances.

Dancehall: the soul of Jamaican sound systems pressed on vinyl
From roots reggae to the digital revolution
Born in the working-class neighbourhoods of Kingston in the late 1970s, dancehall emerged as reggae's rebellious heir. Where roots reggae embraced spiritual and political messages, dancehall turned the mic back to partying, dancing, and the raw realities of everyday life. Early stars like Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, and General Echo built their legends on sound system turntables, sparking memorable 'clashes' where deejays would toast over instrumental versions of well-known riddims. In 1985, Wayne Smith's 'Under Mi Sleng Teng,' produced by King Jammy on a modest Casio keyboard, swept across the island: as the first fully digital riddim, it ushered in the ragga era and sent a whole generation of producers racing for their drum machines. From there, dancehall never stopped reinventing itself, from Shabba Ranks's anthemic flows to Vybz Kartel's hypnotic delivery.
Legendary artists, essential labels, and vinyl treasures
Dancehall's pantheon is filled with larger-than-life figures. Shabba Ranks, the first dancehall artist to win a Grammy (with 'As Raw As Ever' in 1991), paved the way for global recognition. Super Cat, the 'Don Dada,' built a bridge to hip-hop, while Beenie Man and Bounty Killer engaged in a legendary rivalry that produced classic riddims like 'Slam,' 'Fed Up,' and 'Suspense.' Lady Saw, the undisputed queen, opened doors for female artists like Spice and Shenseea. Landmark albums include 'Mister Yellowman' (1982), Super Cat's 'Don Dada' (1992), Beenie Man's 'Blessed' (1995), Bounty Killer's 'My Xperience' (1996), and of course Sean Paul's 'Dutty Rock' (2002), a global phenomenon. Among labels, VP Records leads the catalogue, followed by Greensleeves, Jammy's, Penthouse, and Digital B, all actively sought after by vinyl collectors.
Collecting dancehall on vinyl means diving headfirst into the world of the 7-inch 45, the undisputed king format of Jamaican sound systems. Countless riddims and dub versions existed only on these precious platters, never reissued on CD or streaming. Original Jamaican pressings on labels like Jammy's or Techniques are highly prized, though their pressing quality can vary. Recent reissues by VP Records and Greensleeves offer an excellent alternative for collectors mindful of sound quality. As a price comparison service, Vinyles.com helps you spot the best deals among partner retailers, whether you're hunting an original Super Cat 45 or a 180g vinyl reissue of a Beenie Man classic.
