Andreas Scholl sang Bach for the first time at the age of 9, while he was in a children’s choir. The German countertenor is therefore returning to his musical roots for his new album, with a selection of Cantatas that he particularly loves. These cantatas are designed as true dialogues on an equal footing between solo voices and instruments in a reduced ensemble. The interpretation of a cantata’s theme and the theological narrative is left to the personal judgment of the singers and instrumentalists. For Andreas Scholl, the whole difficulty of this magnificent repertoire lies in understanding and knowing the text and the context in which these works were composed. His wish in recording this album was to “serve Bach’s music as well as possible.” The result is a magnificent album, with an intense atmosphere, marked by contemplation and emotion.
