Grégoire Gerstmans

Liturgical music connects us to centuries of spiritual tradition, blending fervor, contemplation, and sonic beauty. From Gregorian chants to Renaissance polyphonies, each piece invites meditation and a return to the essential.
In the calm of our living room, listening on vinyl diffuses an enveloping warmth and gentleness, offering a moment of inner peace and rare well-being.
This section gathers liturgy vinyl in the classical sense: Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, masses, motets, passions, cantatas and requiems, plus Orthodox liturgy and modern sacred music. It covers both historic recordings and recent performances, such as those led by Philippe Herreweghe, founder of Collegium Vocale Gent and a leading Bach interpreter. In this music, the recording space matters enormously: churches, abbeys and chapels give these records their natural reverb, and a good pressing preserves that depth. It is also a repertoire with plenty of secondhand LPs, many recorded in the 1960s and 1970s, so comparing several copies is well worth the effort.
Sacred music is demanding on vinyl: a cappella choirs, silences and long decays expose every click. On used copies, groove condition comes first. Box sets, common for passions, masses and cantatas, should be complete, with the booklet holding the Latin or German texts and translations. For classic recordings, Speakers Corner reissues reference titles from the original analog tapes. Many period box sets also include a full libretto, which adds real value.
Gregorian chant has long been recorded by the monks of the French abbey of Solesmes. For the Renaissance, Palestrina's "Missa Papae Marcelli" and Allegri's "Miserere" are classics, notably sung by The Tallis Scholars on their Gimell label. Monteverdi's "Vespers of 1610" opens the Baroque. For Bach, Karl Richter recorded the "Mass in B minor" and "St Matthew Passion" for Archiv Produktion, while Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt recorded the complete cantatas. The Mozart and Fauré requiems round out the core. Each of these works exists in many recordings.
The Orthodox tradition offers a fully vocal side, with Rachmaninoff's "All-Night Vigil" as a high point. In the 20th century, Arvo Pärt renewed sacred music with a stripped-down style, released largely on ECM New Series. His "Tabula Rasa" (1984) launched that series. To find these records at a fair price, compare offers across partner stores, since prices vary a lot between editions and between used copies.
