With her first solo album Ya Nass (2013), Yasmine Hamdan presented her personal and modern vision of Arabic-language pop. On Al Jamilat (“the beautiful ones,” feminine), she continues her musical exploration, while also questioning the Arab world and the changes taking place within it. If Yasmine’s vocal style is clearly linked to the traditions of Arabic music, the songs’ structures and arrangements incorporate elements from the most current electronic, folk, and pop music. Yasmine Hamdan produced this album in association with British producers Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche Mode, Lily Allen) and Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Carl Barât, Regina Spektor), and with New York musicians such as Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, John Zorn, Marc Ribot) and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth). Yasmine is a nomad. It is therefore no surprise that the creation of this album took the form of a journey, during which she collected and blended sounds and ideas, interacted with the many people she met along the way (musicians or not), which fed her reflections and enriched the sociopolitical dimension that always appears in the background of her lyrics. The release of the album Ya Nass sparked a great deal of enthusiasm across Europe and North America, as well as in the Maghreb and the Middle East (where Yasmine Hamdan has enjoyed an almost iconic status since her early days with the duo Soapkills. She has performed in prestigious venues on four continents, including as part of concerts tied to the release of Jim Jarmusch’s film Only Lovers Left Alive (in which she sings).
