French Touch Vinyl: Daft Punk, Air, Justice and French Electronic Music
Why French Touch belongs on vinyl
French Touch vinyl makes obvious sense: the movement grew in the 1990s out of producers who worked from records, sampled funk and disco loops and released their tracks on 12-inch singles for DJs. For American listeners, think of it as France's take on filtered house, built on groove, warmth and hooks. This selection covers French Touch and French-speaking electronic music in the broad sense, with Laurent Garnier, St Germain and Mr. Oizo, and it also reaches beyond France to electronic artists such as Saint Etienne, Crystal Castles and SOPHIE.
Essential French Touch albums and 12-inches
Daft Punk remain the reference, with "Homework" (1997), "Discovery" (2001) and "Random Access Memories" (2013). Air gave the scene its dreamy side with "Moon Safari" (1998), and Cassius its club side with "1999." Stardust, the project of Thomas Bangalter, Alan Braxe and Benjamin Diamond, released "Music Sounds Better with You" (1998). Laurent Garnier championed French techno from the early 1990s, St Germain blended house and jazz on "Tourist" (2000), and Mr. Oizo scored with "Flat Beat" (1999). From the late 2000s, Justice with "†" (2007) and Kavinsky with "Nightcall" opened the door for a new generation.
Labels, pressings and reissues
A few labels shaped the genre: Roulé, founded by Thomas Bangalter; Crydamoure, co-founded by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo; F Communications, co-founded by Laurent Garnier; and later Pedro Winter's Ed Banger Records, home of Justice. Original 12-inches on these labels are sought after and often pricey. For listening, the major albums have been reissued several times, so check the edition: double LP, remaster or anniversary release. For 12-inches, note the playback speed and which versions are included.
