Since DAMAGED (2024), Ghost Dubs, aka Michael Fiedler, has established himself as a singular figure on the underground scene, praised in particular by Justin Broadrick, Regis, Pole and Steve Von Till. With Oblique, his second album, he deepens his approach to dub techno through broader, darker and more cinematic soundscapes, blending hazy textures, ghostly pulses, blurred melodies and hypnotic rhythms. From “Low Times,” somewhere between Andy Stott and Basic Channel, to “Blackout Dust” with its Lynchian accents, via “Bombed Suburbs” and its echoes of Augustus Pablo, the album explores a dub techno that is more sensual, dense and impactful. Minimalist in appearance but extremely rich in detail, Oblique sees Ghost Dubs gradually break free from his influences to assert a deeply personal sonic universe, between mystery, hypnosis and futurism.
