On his second album, Tzusing, a Malaysian-born artist based between Shanghai and Taipei, meditates on the complicated history of patriarchal heteronormativity in China and on how these archaic double standards continue to dominate culture in an omnipresent and often invisible way. Having grown up between Singapore, Taiwan, China and the United States, Tzusing was living in Chicago when his love of music turned into an obsession. After moving to China for work, he cut his teeth as a DJ at Shelter in Shanghai and began refining his personal musical signature. A series of EBM-inspired EPs on Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. label were followed in 2017 by his debut album, inspired by the popular Jin Yong novel that tells the story of a swordsman who castrates himself in order to learn a powerful fighting technique. Green Hat picks up the themes of that album, deconstructing another facet of gender as it is perceived in Chinese culture. While Green Hat does not hesitate to lean into its multi-layered concept, the album never loses its dancefloor momentum. From the ruthlessly funky drum inversion of Filial Endure Ruthless to the manic uptempo roll of "Exascale", and the bubbling combination of hissing vocals and downtempo rhythms on "Cloud Tunnel", the producer finds his cruising speed. This album underscores the often frenetic unease that underlies dance music, setting it in parallel with the frenetic stress of infidelity.
