First Taste sets an introspective scene, breaking away from the extroversions of Freedom's Goblin, but it is just as steeped in festive rhythms as its predecessor. The production here is insane, more alien than familiar, with tones and rhythms that proliferate before our ears. There are mountains of percussion and instruments... of all kinds. Horns and synthesizers. Folk pianos too. Always running hot, Ty Segall’s creative neurons suggested he write and record First Taste with a radically new instrumentation - koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, vocals, and of course, a touch of keyboards. And the drums - plural! - in the left speaker, that’s Ty we hear, while Charles Moothart, the Freedom Band drummer, plays the kit on the right side. Whatever the atmosphere of the track, the pedal is pushed to the limit, as much on the lightest ballads as on the most furious rockers. Ty’s vocal feats, always a highlight, provide a refreshing contrast to his mutant orchestra and let the tension seep through his most patient songs, perfectly mastering his wild screams. First Taste is not really a first attempt for Ty, but this latest effort still manages to offer us a remarkably fresh and unprecedented taste. With flavors to discover every day!
