Helmets Off, the debut album by The Hobknobs, will be released on July 24 and will be published by the band itself, with a North American release handled by 12XU. The album stands out for its minimalist and sincere approach: every word, every chord, and every instrument seems to be used only when necessary. This sobriety creates a sense of intimacy, as if the duo is speaking directly to the listener, with a certain lightness and a lot of authenticity. Composed of Yaël Dekker and Arie van Vliet, The Hobknobs explore ambiguous and contrasting themes. Behind melodies that are sometimes sweet or naive lie darker, melancholic, or enigmatic reflections.
Tracks like The Mind, Dictionary, or Enarmoured question the meaning of words, human relationships, and even the idea of conflict. The complementary voices of Dekker and Van Vliet enhance the emotional depth of the songs, while the clean production by Jaap van der Velde highlights their apparent simplicity. The result is an album that is both familiar and unique, finding a rare balance between accessibility and originality.
